Both my fishing Buddy and I headed for the Welsh Dee near Corwen, travelling on the M56 and A483 we saw nothing but rain and a strong wind.....had we made the right decision? It wasn't until we got through Corwen the rain stopped and the sun broke through. A glorious morning awaited us on the Upper Dee.
We headed down to the river and walking along the bank we were both eagle eyed looking for the tell tale signs of a rising fish. Recent rain had not effected the river and it was running clear, ideal !. I had spotted my first fish rising so it was on with my favoured Olive green Klinkhammer (size 18), the fish took it no problem after my second drift through, a nice out of season Grayling around the pound mark. The morning continued in much the same vein with no sign of trout but plenty of Grayling, with many a salmon parr thrown into the mix. The Parr a great sign that the river has healthy stocks coming through.
The day changed during the afternoon, the sunshine had gone and the rain came back for a brief spell, but this didn't ease the appetite of the fish. The old man had spotted a rising fish on the far bank and I was taking a breather so decided to watch him stalk his target. After a little floatant on the fly the first cast went in, a difficult spot to hit in amongst the trees. The water was only a foot or so deep but a stream flowed in from the far bank, surely a holding spot. The Klink went passed first time a little short of the target, thirty plus years or so of fly fishing experience made sure that the second cast hit the spot. Sure enough the fish sipped in the fly, a nice Grayling coming to the net, quickly returned.
We both thought it may have been a trout, but it was not to be. A few more fish taking the dry along the stretch made for good sport. A change of flies and conditions again accounted for a few Parr, the changeable weather on the day seemed to determine the mood of the fish. We called it a day late afternoon as the wind and rain came sweeping in through the valley.
Another great day on the Majestic Welsh Dee, its always a pleasure to visit and relax in the surroundings before the alarm bell rings and its Monday morning again !!!!!........
