The weather forecast for today was typical Bank holiday, strong winds with heavy rain !!. Regardless we set off to the Upper Welsh Dee above Corwen for some sport. On arrival the weather report was spot on, a gale blowing through the valley with heavy cloud cover and plenty of downpours.
Undeterred we set off in expectation of some Trout, we had both opted for small gold head nymphs fished across and down searching likely looking spots. The dry fly was out today and it took some doing controlling the light nymphs through the runs. My fishing buddy was first into a fish a small grayling taking the GRHE, the morning was great sport landing a number of fish, I hooked into a Brown Trout about 10".
The wind and rain eased for the early afternoon but so did the takes, we moved further afield and another change of flies, I tied on the point a gold rib hares ear with an orange tungsten bead this proved to be th
e right move. We had found a nice section of the river sheltered from the elements and the fish were once again in a taking mood. A quick mend of the line and my nymphs were fishing perfectly through the slightly slacker water on the far bank, a dip in the line followed by a great tussle saw a lovely fin perfect Wild Brown Trout hit the net, returned as always to fight another day!
Later that afternoon we wondered some distance to locate more fish, a very nice Grayling estimates at 2lb plus took a shine to the Orange bead GRHE, I have to confess that this fish took the fly whilst I was chatting and the line was left in mid stream on the dangle!. although out of season a strong fighting fish which was quickly returned.
A May day that looked bleak turned out to be one of the best days out this year, plenty of fish taking the flies and several trout to account for.
