After an hours drive from Hampshire to the Bulls Head Fairford in the Cotswolds, Thursday evening was a time for reflection on the Days events from The Test, a few pints of Arkells Bitter and a rump steak finished the day off nicely, and yes the Brownie from the previous day had gained a few more pounds !!.
The Bulls head is a cracking place to stay and quality food and beer to match, with the River Coln on its doorstep. We picked up the tickets and headed to the river for a second day. This river is smaller than the Test but running just as clear and equally as majestic.
I was searching out the pockets and deeper holes with a couple of small nymphs fished Czech style, and it proved to be a winner, all fish falling to a pattern I had taken from Dave Wiltshire, The Brassie. I had tied a number of variants and a size 16 proved its worth with a small pink tungsten bead. The fishing was a lot harder today with the Coln running through higher than normal with a hint of colour, needless to say a good dozen or so Grayling 10"-12"and a couple of small Trout graced our nets. This mile or so stretch of water was a delight to fish and we both had great sport, and certainly worth a trip.
With the Welsh rivers still unfishable it was a welcome break to fish the Test & Coln, both giving up their bounty but I'm sure the bigger Ladys will be about towards the end of the year. For those anglers not lucky enough to be on the doorstep of such rivers, its well worth the Drive to the hallowed grounds of the Test, and even a shorter trip from up North to the Coln in Gloucestershire.
We both cant wait to return.
